Could self-help books actually be damaging America's psychic well-being? According to the authors of the new humor book, SELF-HELPLESS, the answer may well be, "Yes."

"I would walk into a book store feeling fine," explains co-author Jonathan Bines. "Then I'd reach the self-help section, and suddenly I'd begin to feel insecure. I would start asking myself: 'Do I sweat the small stuff? Do I love too much? Have I made the connection? And am I really in touch with my inner child, my recovering artist, my personal power, my wild man, my secret garden, or my guardian angel?'"

Co-author Gary Greenberg concurs: "A lot of times, self-help books are just an avoidance mechanism. You buy them to help you confront problems, but all you're really doing is reading about confronting the problem – and then you go buy another book. It's self-destructive behavior."

Rather than give in to their self-doubt and negative feelings, Bines and Greenberg have struck back.
