| SHOPPER ACCIDENTALLY DONATES WEDDING RING TO LOCAL THRIFT STORE |
5/31/2004 North Bay, ON – When Stacy Von Mierlo donated a bag of items at her local Value Village store over the holiday season, she felt good knowing her donation would benefit the store's local charity partner, the Canadian Diabetes Association. Little did she know, however, that inside that bag of donations was a purse…with her wedding ring inside. Mrs. Von Mierlo was participating in Value Village's Give a Little, Get a Lot campaign, which highlighted the relationship between the store chain and its area charity partners by providing shoppers who donated a bag of re-sellable items a coupon good for 20% off their next purchase. Value Village pays its charity partners for every donation received, year-round. When Mrs. Von Mierlo realized her wedding ring was inside of a purse she had donated to the store, she went to the North Bay Value Village with little hope of recovering it. The store manager and his team checked the status of their donations from the day Mrs. Van Mierlo had been in, and learned that they had already been processed and put out on the sales floor. Along with Mr. and Mrs. Van Mierlo, the store team searched through eight barrels of handbags in an effort to track down the purse in question. “All I could do was hope the purse was still here,” said Ken Landry, store manager. “Our regular handbag pricer who would have seen it was on holiday, and having just returned from vacation myself, none of our team members were in the position to recall the specific purse.” As time passed, there was little hope of finding the ring. However, thanks to an extreme amount of diligence and concern from store team members, the purse – and the ring – were found, almost four weeks after Mrs. Von Mierlo had been in the store. Mrs. Von Mierlo was contacted, the ring returned, and with great appreciation and gratitude, she treated the entire store team to coffee and sent a warm letter of thanks.
