INTRODUCING WOMANHATTAN.COM, A SITE FOR THE WOMEN OF MANHATTAN AND THE MEN OF WOMANHATTAN

MARCH IS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH. For New Yorkers, March 1999 wentt down in history as the month that Womanhattan.com made its debut on the WorldWideWeb.

For the many people who visit or move to Manhattan--and even people who have been here for a while--the city can be a big, intimidating, lonely place. Though Manhattan is just a tiny little island, it sometimes seems larger and scarier than the "global village"--the world created by digital communications and the internet.

Not for long.

Enter Womanhattan.com, a site for the women of Manhattan and the men of Womanhattan. The mission of the website is to make New York City a little smaller and a lot less complicated. We believe we can turn New York City into a community again. Womanhattan.com has already received a mention on the front page of the business section of the WASHINGTON POST in the TechThursday column, and in NEW YORK NEWSDAY.

The Womanhattan.com Website is created to be fun and informative at the same time for all New Yorkers, with a sensibility that can only be described as uniquely Manhattan. Womanhattan is designed to appeal particularly to women, BUT through our upcoming singles area and other areas, this site will attract and appeal both men and women. In addition, there are areas on the site—such as the Culture Junkie and H-wire columns--that will have an appeal that extends far beyond the borders of the Hudson and East Rivers.

WOMANHATTAN.COM CURRENTLY FEATURES

-Weekly new content

-The Womanhattan Calendar--a calendar of events of women artists, musicians,
performers, comediennes all over New York City. Submissions to website are
free (See below for format on Womanhattan calendar submissions).

-The "Culture Junkie" column--an entertaining and thought-provoking critique
of culture and current events--by a columnist who is addicted to the stuff.
Read about the Oscar Awards for "Longest Speech," "Shortest & Sweetest
Speech," and "Most Inappropriate Dance Number." Also read book review: "A
Matriarchy of Sluts? A book review of Wendy Shalit's 'A Return to Modesty'
and 'The Rules.'" Culture Junkie will have a local urban flavor, but also
appeal to people outside of New York City.

-An up-to-date list of links. Everyone knows the Web can be a timekiller, but
did you know that it can be a huge timesaver as well? Visitors to Womanhattan.com are one click away from local weather & news, childcare listings and activities for kids, local movie listings, shopping sales bulletin, home delivery by zip, and much much more. Search for a restaurant by type of cuisine, find places in your area that deliver to your home, get the inside scoop on shopping sales, and a lot more--all within a New York minute. There are a lot of great resources out there on the Web for Womanhattanites, and we help you find them!

-the Womanhattan Bookshop, in association with Amazon.com. The number of independent "Mom and Pop" bookstores in NYC has unfortunately dwindled to a small handful--but we hope to provide the atmosphere of a small, carefully stocked bookstore with fiction and nonfiction titles of special interest to Womanhattanites (though all titles on Amazon are searchable), with book reviews of select new titles.

WOMANHATTAN.COM WILL SOON FEATURE:
-Daily new content. Movie, theater, and art reviews

-A singles area with bulletin boards and chat

-WoMomhattan area--a special area offering resources for Moms.

-A lesbian page, with columns and bulletin boards.

-Search engine and local news banner.

-(Real) Parties for Womanhattanites--meet the faces behind the words.

-Web pages for small businesses and select New York fashion designers. We will provide pages and web design services for unique, one-a-kind businesses that you can only find in Manhattan, such as a secondhand thrift shop with an onsite tailor, a coffee lounge where urbanites roast s'mores over a fire, and a barber that hosts haircutting parties for kids. These businesses have the opportunity to have a page at a prestigious Web address.

Womanhattan plans to feature in the future:

-Listing of woman doctors in NYC (no endorsements), and list of 24-hour
pharmacies in NYC.

-apartment/roommate swap boards

-listing of women-only self-defense and martial arts classes.

-"Out-of-Borough Experience"--a guide to the other four boroughs.

-Tricks and tips for making life in NYC easier.

-Women's business boards/ networking.

THE WOMEN BEHIND WOMANHATTAN
Womanhattan is a grass-roots site founded by two native Womanhattanites:

HALLIE LEIGHTON has been earning a living as a freelance writer and consultant for two years. She writes about women's lifestyles and demographics for the "Lifestyle Monitor," a masthead page column that appears every Thursday in Woman's Wear Daily (WWD). Hallie has worked as a writers assistant at CBS daytime ("As the World Turns"), and at Random House, Inc. in sales and marketing for two years. She graduated from St. John's College, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A self-described "Culture Junkie," she looks forward to writing her weekly fun column on pop and high culture in NYC and beyond. In her spare time she does dead-on impressions of Janis Joplin and Debbie Harry of Blondie.

ALITA J. LYONS graduated with a degree in psychology from the University of Washington in Seattle. She has done biomedical research in the area of women's health at Cornell University for four years, and is currently a freelance web designer. She is interested in disseminating information about women's health issues on the Web. She has lived in Seattle, Zurich, and London, but somehow she always ends up back in New York.

We are currently seeking partners to help make the site an inclusive, indispensable resource for Womanhattanites. We will seek advertisers after we have developed a strong sense of who we are and what kind of community we are creating. The founders of Womanhattan.com are available for interviews.
