| New women's magazine fills void and brings women together to discuss real issues |
5/31/2004 Modern Woman is a fresh magazine that fills the void of many consumer magazines for women. It discusses real issues affecting women and explores them from the women's perspective. Founder and editor April Miller said she wanted to create a magazine that stimulated discussion about serious topics among women. “Although many women's interest magazines are entertaining to read, they do not always encourage discussion of the issues,” she said. “I want all women to interact with each other and tell their stories. All women have incredible stories to tell. They just need a medium.” While Modern Woman discusses the serious side of life, it also has articles that present the lighter side. “Each issue will have stories about that month's social awareness,” April said. “For example, our May issue will have a section on hearing and speech awareness, and alongside it will be women's personal accounts of how those issues have affected them. However, we will also have Mother's Day articles, summer travel ideas for those on a budget and fun activities families can do together. Women are daughters, mothers, wives and friends. I want them to have a magazine that represents each of their roles in society.” One of Modern Woman's writers said the magazine is the kind she would pick up in the store. “The list of article ideas is refreshing and interesting,” she said. “Especially compared to the drivel that fills most magazines geared to women. I think Modern Woman is coming out at the exact right time...Woman want a magazine about them, about what they think and what they care about!” Modern Woman will have giveaways for readers with prizes donated by advertisers and sponsors.
